What It Does

After learning the basics of a language, reading and listening to native content are essential in continuing to progress. LanguageBot can help optimize your daily practice by transcribing listening content, explaining things you don't understand, and serving as a conversation partner and writing tutor. (The examples below show an English speaker learning Turkish, but LanguageBot works with most target languages.)

FAQ

What languages does it support?
It can work with any language, but I've tested it using:
  • English
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Portuguese
  • Italian
  • German
  • Russian
  • Chinese
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Arabic
  • Turkish

If ChatGPT doesn't have sufficient training data in a particular language, it's unlikely to work well. If you'd like to try it with a language I haven't listed here, let me know. The user interface is currently only in English, but you can set your native language to be anything.
What AI does it use?
LanguageBot is built on top of GPT-4, OpenAI's latest and most advanced language model. It works impressively well as a language tutor (which is why I built this). Transcriptions are done by Whisper which, in my experience, rarely makes a mistake on clear audio. GPT-4 can still be wrong or hallucinate sometimes. This technology is exciting and good enough to be genuinely useful, but it's not perfect. I'll keep LanguageBot up to date as AI technology improves. As it gets better, LanguageBot will too.
Can this teach me a language? Is it a course?
No. This is a tool intended for intermediate to advanced language learners that have progressed to self-study. You pick the podcasts, videos, or text. I personally use LanguageBot to help me study news, podcasts, and videos, while continuing to practice speaking with live partners. I find that LanguageBot can usually answer questions and correct my writing in a satisfying way that makes my time with live tutors more productive.
Can I try it for free?
There is no free trial, but if you want to subscribe and try it out, please do. If you're not satisfied with it after the first week, I'll give you a full refund.

About

Hello! My name is Justin. I built this when I realized GPT-4 was remarkably good at explaining language and wanted a way to interact with it that fit into my study routine. I've learned French and Chinese in the past, but am currently many years into an obsession with the Turkish language. I use LanguageBot for about an hour every morning from my apartment in Istanbul. I have lots of cool ideas that I'd like to continue building into LanguageBot. I'm asking for $10 per month, which covers the costs of the AI models and supports my continued work on this project. Feel free to get in touch any time with questions or thoughts. I hope you find this as useful as I have. -Justin
